With Mothers Day coming up I'm excited to see what Max and Scott have in order for me. I don't expect any of this, nor do I expect anything except a handmade card and a cuddle. But a girl can dream eh!

Yesterday I was invited by the lovely Hannah to attend the Bournemouth Blogger meet. I've never really done one of these before and didn't know what to expect. I'm not the most outgoing of people.

(Photo taken from Hannah's blog)

There were 16 of us and it was lovely! Everyone was really nice and even though I didn't get to speak to everyone I cant wait to stalk some new blogs.

Hannah was so nice as a host, giving us some icebreakers to get to know someone you've not met before. I met Brogan and learnt that she had started her own business and was 4 years younger than me (seriously she's awesome- when I was 18 I didn't even know what I wanted!) We also had a blogger quiz about everything from celebrities to the world of blogging. I was teamed with the lovely Robyn and Joe and our team name was the brilliant 'You're a quizzard Harry!' and of course we were amazing and won the quiz (I spend way too much time reading celeb news at times) and I received an amazing Lush gift box which I can't wait to dive into.

Hannah put together some amazing and gorgeous goodie bags for all who attended and oh my gosh I was not prepared for how beautiful it all is! Some of the gifts were from Lush, Next, John Frieda and Republic. We also had some gorgeous Jimmy's Iced Coffee which Scott stole pretty swiftly and some handmade goodies from some of the girls own shops/businesses.

I'm so flattered and grateful that Hannah thought to invite me to this. It was amazing to speak to Wendy, another mum blogger and learn that it's not just me in Bournemouth blogging on my own! Hopefully I can head down to the next one and I can spend the new few hours browsing over some of my new favourite blogs.

7 things in 7 days

Some of my favourite things that have happened this past week!

1. Yes I got Beyonce tickets! I was so excited when that confirmation email came through that I called my best mate (who I'm going with) and started screaming down the phone. We've booked our hotel and can't wait to party with the queen of music herself.

2. Crafting. I'm not the best at it but I really enjoyed test driving this sharpie on a plate technique. We are going to get Max to draw on some for mothers day presents for mine and Scott's mums.

3. Going to the theatre! I've already blogged about it but it was amazing to take Max out and enjoy something with him that I have loved my whole life.

4. Wedding invitation are just flooding in at my door. Not for mine unfortunately, thats a long way off. But still I'm so excited to attend all of these. Definitely need to get my exercise and diet on to lose a bit more weight.

5. Reading an amazing book. I got sent this by the lovely people at Little Brown and am absolutely loving the story. It's something that's right up my street and a review is to follow soon!

6. Life goes on. A few years ago a 'friend' screwed me over by trash talking Scott, trash talking my life and basically making me feel like the worst human on earth. It ended with me hitting them and deleting/blocking them from every thing possible. A few days ago I got tagged in a post from a 'mutual friend' saying how she was guilty and she wanted to forgive me and be my friend. Life goes on and things change. It's been too long and she won't ever be part of my life again. Grovelling gets your nowhere, especially 3 years on.

7. This guy. He has made me laugh so much this week, especially when I've been feeling down or had a hard time. Even in the past week I've felt he's grown up so much and I'm so blessed to have him and Scott in my life.

Graphic Tees

Now spring is upon us (nearly) I am on the hunt for some amazing graphic tops for Max. Boys clothes are either too cute or just boring so when I see something I love I jump on it quicker than you can say 'Wait! Your bank balance hates you'. Here are some of my favourites though.

I love these three from H&M. Max always looks great in bright clothes and the cartoons are just adorable. He actually has a couple of these already because my credit card was calling for them! H&M are great for cheap and cheerful tops ranging from £3.99 upwards. Max seems to get stains on most of his clothes so these are great for play time.

Next is always my go-to shop for Max's clothes. And this range of media inspired tops are just the best. Unfortunately most of them are out of stock in Max's size (boooo) but as soon as they come in he definitely needs a Jaws and Back To The Future top. Next tops are always amazing quality and I find that they are still soft 20 washes later!

It actually took me a while to realise that River Island had a kids section. I never go in there so never realised some of the cool kids clothes they have. Granted they are at the top end of my budget but it's nice to buy something for special occasions or as a treat. I love the skeleton top as it's so quirky and who doesn't love a good superhero. Only thing about these tops is that they come up quite small and the tops are quite thin compared to other companies tops. Regardless it doesn't stop me buying them.

Theatre is something that I love, and so are children's books so when I found out last week that one of my favourites was coming to a local theatre I jumped at the chance to take Max.

Max loves theatre as much as me, sitting in awe when he saw the Gruffalo over summer. And this adaptation reminded me of their tried and tested formula that kids know and love! Based on the book by Oliver Jeffers this play was a perfect

Stuck is the tale of Floyd who gets his kite stuck in a tree and decides to throw anything and everything up there to try and get it out (including the kitchen sink!)

The show had a cast of two and they were fantastic. They really reacted with the audience well (and when there are a bunch of 2-6yr olds it can be difficult) and Max loved singing, dancing and shouting along with the story of Floyd that he knows and loves.

The staging was simple with the tree and some bushes and adorable cut out characters and objects that magically got stuck in the tree. Max was in awe of the giant whale that got stuck up a tree and he was shocked that orangutan had a special dance move haha.

It's definitely a show to take your little ones too. Especially if you love Jeffers work as much as we do.

Tickets and more information can be found here.

Room Tour

Spending this week deep cleaning the flat has made me love our lovely little place. It's rented so we can't do much to change it but I love the little touches we have. Max's room is my all time favourite. I've channelled my inner child into it so here is a little room tour.

I love all the pictures in Max's room. Especially this Oliver Jeffers one that is framed. It's from his book 'This Moose Belongs To Me'. He also has pictures from Cars, Toy Story and Where The Wild Things Are. The tail is from a company called Tell Tails who ran a stall at Camp Bestival. Nothing there took our eye so I asked them to custom make one for him. He loves it and dressing up!

The big blue box is only half of his books, he has well over 100 crammed into his tiny room. I love picking up little bits and bobs like the Rabbit night light and the Spaceboy print. Unfortunately he has to have our internet box and the tumble dryer in his room as thats where the only space is. We got him this adorable retro scooter from Zulily for christmas and he's a little short but loves it!

We are Cath Kidston obsessives here and he loves his mini rucksack that he uses every day for nursery! Along with every other child under the age of 5 he is obsessed with soft toys and loves his Disney ones. Finally we made him a banner with his favourite quote on.

I hope you liked the little tour of his room.
“It's strange because sometimes, I read a book, and I think I am the people in the book.” ― Stephen ChboskyThe Perks of Being a Wallflower

Books have always meant something to me. I've probably spent half my life curled up somewhere reading books over and over again for some strange reason or another. I get highlighters and pens out and note down quotes and special things that mean something to me. The books that don't mean that much to me get passed to friends and family so they can enjoy them instead. Working in a bookshop has opened my eyes to some amazing new stories and one that I think I need to share with you guys. It's hard to compile a top 5  4 but these are probably it.

Perks is my most favourite book ever. I remember when I first picked it up nearly 8 years ago it changed my life. I was going through a terrible time and I sought comfort in it. Knowing that Charlie had felt the same. Even to this day it's still my favourite book. I've lent out 4 copies of it so the copy I have now will never leave me. It's always in my bag for when I need to read it. It's a story about growing up, about finding who you are and learning about life. The movie is awesome too. I was skeptical but the casting was perfect, the script was superb and I can't think of any more words to describe it. Read it, watch it and love it too.

It seems like everyone has read this John Green book. Reading his titles seemed like a natural progression from Perks as the writing style and the voice seems to be of a similar nature. Whilst TFiOS isn't my favourite I think that it's up there with the best. The tale of young cancer sufferers trying to make their life seem a bit more optimistic doesn't seem like the nicest of stories! I was lucky enough to get tickets to see him talk about this book and learning that it had taken him so long to write it and find the right way to convey the story meant that it is one of my top books.

Harold Fry goes to post a letter but decides to carry on walking. This is his tale of a journey across the country trying to work out the meaning of his life and work out if his story is worthwhile and his life been fully lived. It's such a refreshing read. Whilst the story is slow in pace it feels as if you are following his journey too. It was one of the first books I read when I started at Waterstones and definitely my most recommended.

Yes another story about a child that's different to everyone else. But this book is different. I remember picking this book up as a proof. Just being drawn into the cover and thinking that it looked different and like something that I would really love (I'm a sucker for book covers) and I wasn't wrong. The story is told from everyones point of view so you realise that it doesn't affect one person, but all his family and friends too. Not in a bad way but in a life changing one.

Max has been pretty up and down recently. No daytime naps and late evenings while being over stimulated hasn't been a good equation. Nighttimes have always been a nightmare for us. We rarely get a full night's sleep but when we do it's bliss.

Some of the things I have learnt that have helped Max are:

  • Bathtime before bed. Our go to product is Lush's Ickle Baby Bot. We break it in half in a shallow warm bath, and it's filled with lavender and chamomile so it smells gorgeous. Max also has other bath bombs but these are the best for telling him no.
  • Books not TV. Max has over 150 books (yes I get carried away in book shops!) so we are never short of new stories. There are so many that he loves but we sit in his room with a few night lights on and read some of his favourites.
  • Hooty Brown Owl. Max got given this for christmas and it's been a lifesaver. 20 minutes before bed we pop this in the microwave and then it warms up his bed while filled with the smell of lavender (we like lavender at bedtime) so his room is nice and relaxing.
  • No distractions. We don't keep many toys in his room. The ones we do keep in there need putting back together or are quiet in the hope that he won't want to play with them. He has many soft toys but prefers to have conversations with them before bed. He tells them how his day was and what he did.
Our methods don't work for everyone. Some people prefer to co-sleep and that's never been something we've done (Max ends up kicking me out of bed!) and some people prefer cry it out or using the Cbeebies nightime story to help. Max is starting to sleep through. I can't wait for the time when he's 15 and I'm forcing him out of bed at 5am haha.

10 Things About Me

I've seen so many people write these and I feel that I've jumped into this blogging things without people getting to know me. So here are a few fun facts.

  1. I live in Bournemouth, in the middle of student central and it sucks at night time! The students are so loud and disruptive that I wish I lived somewhere a bit quieter. I really want to live in Scotland. I have amazing friends there and the places are gorgeous.
  2. I've struggled with my weight for years, I'm 2 stone lighter than I was a year ago but still about 4 away from my happy place. It will happen. Previously I lost weight through the wrong methods and I want to do it the right way. I don't want Max to have an ill mum.
  3. I studied Commercial Photography at Uni. Despite loving photography I hated the course and now want to be a copywriter for a company instead. Oops! Despite that I still love taking photos and would prefer to be behind the camera than infront of it.
  4. I never wanted children until I found out I was pregnant with Max. Also I found out I was pregnant when I was 26 weeks - I had been on the pill and it had cut out all symptoms. Being a mum is great but really tough. Some days I want to give it all up and curl in bed and hibernate, but when I hear Max scream 'Mummy you are so funny, I love you' It makes it all worth it.
  5. Me and Scott got together 2 weeks before Max was conceived. We met online through mutual friends and apparently I lured him in with music and booze! I've met some of the best friends online and I wouldn't have it any other way.
  6. I want my future home to be painted soft grey and blue (quite like my jumper) In a nice location with enough land to build a treehouse in the garden and a vegetable patch. We are moving in with Scott's parents in October to make our dreams come true and save for a deposit.
  7. I am in a job that I finally love. I do the stationary and gifts at Waterstones and love going to work each day and knowing I'm surrounded by books and pretty things. I have a sinking feeling I won't get a transfer to a local store which will break my heart but it's been my favourite job ever.
  8. I can't wait to get married and have it all planned out in my head! The location, the dress, the photography. I need to get my weight and finances in order first. And Scott needs to ask me aswell.
  9. I spend most of my free time reading. There's something about the escapism of a book. My favourite is Perks Of Being A Wallflower. It changed and saved my life. I can't explain why but it did. All my favourite books have bits highlighted in them so I never forget them.

So, I guess we are who we are for alot of reasons. And maybe we’ll never know most of them. But even if we don’t have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there. We can still do things. And we can try to feel okay about them.”
  10. Some days I'm not okay. Some days I'm amazing. I don't think I will ever find the right balance. I have the support around me to help though. I can write and I will write. I don't know where it will take me. I don't know what I will do. All I do know is that I have my family and friends. There may not be many and they may not all be close by. Right now these moment's aren't stories, they are what's happening right now.

When it comes to makeup I am rubbish. I have no idea what order things go and I normally poke my eye out with mascara on a daily basis. Having some amazing friends that love makeup however means that I am slowly learning. Maybe fashion could be the next thing to try once I master this? Above is a before and after. I'd like to think it looks okay, well okay for someone that before summer didn't use anything other than moisturiser and mascara.

My lovely friends have taught me things and I've worked out a quick routine that I can do with a small child hanging off my leg asking to play with everything and watch Yo Gabba Gabba.

Anyway, on my little journey into the world of beautifying myself some of my favourites have become:

  • Clinique's Anti Blemish Foundation - My skin is a mixture of dry, oily and flares up red at any given moment so I found this was one of the only foundations that actually kept the redness down and didn't make me look orange with a dry face! It's pricey but seems to last a few months which is good and means that I can save up my boots points to spend on it haha.
  • Benefits Porefessional - I swear pretty much every beauty blog I read mentions this product at one point. Since having Max my pores are like that of a sweaty teenager and this seems to have significantly reduced the appearance of them with the makeup on. I also love the way that it's in a tiny tube so that I can keep it in my bag incase things start to go a bit pear shaped in the face department.
  • Clinique Chubby Stick - I love this, it's my must have product. Even when I do the nursery run with no makeup on I still have this on my lips. At the moment I'm loving the Curviest Caramel as it's not too bright and perfect for the winter months.
  • Soap and Glory Archery - My eyebrows are horrible and pretty patchy. I'm still getting the hang of properly doing eyebrows and I know that I need to get them properly shaped or just organised. This product however fills in those dodgy blank bits and makes them look a bit more normal.
  • Soap and Glory Thick And Fast Mascara - I can't count the amount of mascara's I've tried that claim to do this or do that, this one seems to do the trick for me however. Along with most other people I picked it up from the xmas sales in Boots. My lashes are pretty stumpy and horrible but these actually make it look like I have eyelashes!
All of the above gets teamed with lush moisturiser, cheap powder and eyeliner (I can't afford expensive everything! Especially with Max's wardrobe to upkeep haha)

I have loads I need to learn. I'm rubbish with makeup and I bet Scott could do a better job than me but in the meantime I need to get the hang of a few things (fake eyelashes and eyebrows) learn more about what those different brushes all do and maybe try some daring red lipstick or bright eyeshadow.

So who wants to give me lessons in walking in heels now?

Hi my name's Laura and I have a shopping addiction...for children's clothes. Thank god I have a child to wear them! Max has a very extensive wardrobe. I think it's because I prefer for him to look good than scruffy all the time. That's not to say he's not always covered in some paint, goo, gunk or some other substance that you have no idea about. I've just realised that sometimes paying a little bit more does in fact get you better quality with kids clothes.

Next and M&S are two of my favourite brands at the moment and when I found a couple of gift cards hidden in my bag I jumped at the opportunity to buy some stuff. I've just done a big clear out of his old stuff that he's either outgrown or that doesn't look right any more.

Thankfully some lovely friends wanted to buy it all off me so I sold a bit and donated the rest to Macmillian Cancer Charity. My mum works for them and they put together clothing bundles for parents that have cancer and cannot afford to buy clothes for the children. I also donated loads of nappies and toys to add to the bundles. I really love helping out with her work any way I can and since having Max I haven't been able to pop in anymore.

After snagging some jeans for Max in Next (they NEVER have his size in so I always have to wait or order) I realised that he needed some new tops as some of them were riding up quite high when he bent over. He also lives in round neck jumpers as they are so easy to whip off and layer up with things such as his rain jacket.

So I ended up getting him a Ghostbusters top and funny face jumper from Next, a camouflage jumper and camera top from M&S and who couldn't refuse this gorgeous comic relief x Stella Mccartney top from TKMaxx. All without spending a penny. And might I add all in the next size up so he can wear them loads!

I still can't believe how big he's getting. I found a top he wore when he was a few months old and compared with a top he wears now and almost cried. the top fit into the whole of the torso of the new tops! He's no longer a baby.

Tiny Homes!

http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/products/walden/#ad-image-0

It's something that I've been thinking about more and more. Maybe not as our main home, I don't think I could live in that close proximity with Scott and Max, and I desperately want my own office space or at least a reading nook. But it's something that I would love as a second home. Or as a bit in the bottom of our garden that the kid(s) can use as a hideout or something.

http://tinyhousing.ca/modules/mod_AutsonSlideShow/images/002.jpg

I love the idea of having minimal possessions, using up minimal land space and basically sizing everything down. Houses these days can be so massive and overwhelming. I'd love to just get away from it all. Don't get me wrong I love my home comforts so a life of homesteading and living off the land is a bit too much of a stretch for me but the ideas are something I want to implement into my life, especially once we buy a place.

http://littleyellowdoor.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/dsc_0028.jpg?w=1000&h=

It's a big dream. Something that will take us years to achieve but I can't wait. I love looking at blogs online of families and people that are living in their tiny houses or using them as playhouses, offices or holiday homes.

This summer we are moving in with Scotts parents. They have a small outhouse in the bottom of their garden which me and Scotts sister plan to renovate for Max to play in. If that's successful then I know that we can build our own tiny home at some point.

Today I went to London. It's rare that I get a full day away from being a mum. But today was a special day. I attended a talk by one of my favourite authors, John Green to be exact. His talk was in regards to his book The Fault In Our Stars. If you haven't read it then I highly recommend you pick it up! It's basically a story about love, loss and cancer. One that will have you laughing and crying within minutes of each other. Something that will definitely leave an impression.

I awoke at 5am, got myself ready and got dropped of at the station for the 7:50am train (yawn!) but managed to finish my book (pretty little liars book 11) and eat some breakfast before getting to London and meeting my lovely and gorgeous friend Ginny!

Ginny is a mummy too but she's one of those mummies that I have pretty much everything in common with so we don't just sit there and talk about kids. Infact weddings were our talk today (a mutual friends- not ours!) We managed to weave our way through the streets of Victoria to find Cadogan Hall and got ourselves our free signed book and settled down along with everyone else.

It was amazing, to hear what the ideas and reasons behind the books were from John himself was just inspiring. I really want to write a kids book and I think that this gave me the spur to try it. If it fails then I can go back to it or just write it off. There's nothing to lose. Hank Green also came onstage and played us some of his songs and they did some Tuesday questions which hopefully we can see on their Vlog sometimes!

Finally we ate. We ate lots. We went to the M&M's store, the hagen daas store and had the most delicious mango sorbet drink ever! And we went to Waterstones and Ginny spent a lot of money on books (yayyy!)

February is the month of love, at least for those that are into the whole charade of Valentines day. For me and Scott we take it as an opportunity to buy each other the cheesiest presents we can find but here are some of my favourites that I've come across this year.
