Charles Michael, Cystic Fibrosis and the Busking Challenge

Meet Charlie. A 19 year old singer, actor, comedian, and all round great guy. He's also got Cystic Fibrosis. I've known Charlie for a long time (I could embarrass him with photos but I'm not that mean!) and it's amazing to see how determined he is in becoming the greatest performer on earth - don't get big headed pal!

Cystic Fibrosis is a life limiting illness. It's not one you can catch or your body can create, it's something that you are born with. One that affects your body, specifically your lungs and digestive system, by producing really thick mucus that your body simply can't shift. There isn't a cure for cystic fibrosis. It can be maintained by different treatments and half of people with cystic fibrosis can live beyond 40 now with the treatments available.

There's not much publicity around about cystic fibrosis. In a world where there are different charities at each corner it can be hard to find your voice. Charlie has recently spent a long time in hospital recovering from some of the side effects of cystic fibrosis and realised that he wanted to do something to create awareness and raise a bit of money at the same time.

See I mentioned that Charlie is a singer and performer. Well he's created a song about cystic fibrosis that's been floating around the internet for quite a while and picking up a bit of attention. Whilst that all well and good (and he would be so pleased if you shared it on social media) he's decided he wants to do something more.

Busking! What better way to catch someones attention than a good old fashioned busking session. Charlie will be making his way up and down the country, busking in 51 different towns and cities to raise as much money and awareness as he can for The Cystic Fibrosis Trust's 51'st birthday. He's not confirmed dates and places yet, but the best thing to do is follow his facebook for up to date information.

It's hard to put into words how important it is to raise awareness for illnesses such as cystic fibrosis. I know I haven't done an amazing job, but I know that Charlie will do everyone proud. Go out and support him. I know I will!

Oops! We Put Up The Tree

After much complaining and nagging from Max we finally caved and let him help us put the tree up....In November!

He is so chuffed with the star he put on the tree and the gorgeous glittery baubles he piced to add to our tree this year.

Now we just have him asking every morning if Santa has arrived.

My Christmas Wishlist.

I've been really stumped this year. People are asking what I want for Christmas and all I can come up with is things for Max or the family. So I sat down and thought really hard. What would I want and love as a gift.

  • Vivienne Westwood Saffiano Purse
I absolutely adore this purse. The hint of blue inside and the classic logo on the front. I've been through so many purses that I think I need to invest in something that would last for longer than a year!
  • Digby and Iona x Oliver Jeffers Penguin Necklace
Okay. Oliver Jeffers is a love of mine. This necklace is a beautiful adult representation of his classic Lost and Found book.
  • Mollie Makes Magazine Subscription
I love Mollie Makes magazine. Each month I race to buy it and devour the freebie makes (unless it's crochet. I can't crochet). A subscription would be amazing as it would be like a monthly present at my door.
  • Belle Pop! Vinyl
Me and Scott collect these adorable figures and this will go really well with my Belle collection. I've been obsessed with Beauty and the Beast since I was little.
  • Charlie and The Chocolate Factory Tickets
I'm a theatre snob. I'll admit that. I've seen most things that have graced the west end and local theatres. Having said that I'm yet to see this fabulous winner so this would be a must!
  • Nyponros Duvet
I am in desperate need of a good quality duvet and cover. Something I can sink into after a long day and sleep well. This would be amazing as its a great classic cover.

Caramel Fudge

This Christmas we are trying to focus on handmade goods. Christmas shouldn't be about how much money you can spend but time together, so we are making small hampers for people with home made goodies. Here's our gorgeous caramel fudge recipe.

You will need:
  • 395g tin of condensed milk
  • 450g Demerara sugar
  • 115g butter
  • 150ml milk
  • Caramel flavouring (we use Dr Oetker)
  • Any other toppings you fancy. Chocolate chips are always a hit in this indulgent house.
How to:
  • Line a baking tin with parchment paper, this will make it easier to take it out once it has set.
  • Put the condensed milk, milk, butter and sugar in a pan and heat until it has all melted.
  • Bring it to the boil and continually stir for 15 minutes. If you have a sugar thermometer it should be roughly 118 degrees centigrade.
  • Remember to scrape the pan thoroughly as it burns the bottom quite fast. Another way to test is to drop a small amount into a glass of ice water. It should form a soft fudgy ball if its ready.
  • Take it off the heat and add your flavouring. We used about 1 teaspoon but you can add as much or little as you like!
  • Then it's time to beat it. Beat it like your life depends on it. During the beating it's time to add your extras like chocolate chips as they are less likely to melt.
  • When your fudge is becoming firm and starting to set it's time to pop it into your baking tin. Make sure it's even and level, we normally just throw it in and then eat the little offcuts.
  • Leave it in the fridge for a couple of hours to set and then use a sharp knife to cut into bite size pieces.

Frame Again Photo Frames

There's a new company about town and I LOVE them! Frame Again are a great British company providing awesome framed images for those that want something a bit different to the norm.

Their website is easy to work your way around. Firstly you upload your image to the site, either from your phone, instagram or computer. Then you choose the frame colours. This is the best bit. It allows you full creative control to create a frame that fits the image perfectly.

Despite being a photographer I hardly have any photos up in my new place. I find that most places have horrible print quality. Frame Again provide you with prints that are of great quality. I'm so impressed with my prints.

I chose to go with a great one of Max in his Max outfit with complementing yellow ring, whilst the other was taken at the aquarium so I wanted to use a great bright blue. They arrived within 48 hours of ordering and were packaged securely in some great frame again wrapping.

What I didn't realise until I got them was that they have magnets inside so that they can attach together and create a wall of images almost in amazing frames. This is great as it means that I don't have to hang them on the walls and they are sturdy enough to stand on the side. They do however have a normal fitting at the back to hang on a wall, but who really wants to do that?!

I absolutely love these images. I'm constantly moving them around at the moment as I can't decide where I want them to go. The fact they are so personal to us makes them so much more special. I can't wait to decide what to add next!

Finding my "me" time

Us mums are amazing people. We work hard, make sure theres food on the table, bills are paid and everyone is well dressed. But we don't spend half as much time on ourselves as the others in our family. I know I'm one of those. Max can look gorgeous and I'm there in a ratty top and leggings looking like I've just woken up.

It used to be easier. Max used to go to preschool in the mornings. Giving me that time to do things I wanted; like have a bath, run, craft and blog. Now all of that has to be crammed into an hour each evening, once all the housework has been done and spent a bit of time with Scott. Most nights I'm still awake at 2am and up again at 6am when Max is jumping on the bed.

Max now goes to preschool when I'm at work. I have 20 minutes from dropping him off, to get myself ready for work and pick Scott up so he can drop me off. I'm struggling to find that time where I could do things for ME rather than for everyone else. I'm argumentative, tired and feel so crappy that I'm ill all the time.

I know it's not forever. This time next year Max will be in school and I'll be missing him and our time together each day. We do some amazing things together. From baking and crafts to snuggles on the sofa in front of a good movie. But I've completely lost my identity again. The thing that makes me Laura, not mummy.

This coming year I'm going to focus. Try and put myself in the forefront of things as if I'm not healthy or happy then it's going to affect the others around me. I need to think more positively. I need to book trips and days out without Max, ask for help from those around me and not feel guilty!

But for now I'll live with a mug of hot chocolate in bed with some Pretty Little Liars on the laptop.

Christmas Art

The day we had our paints out we decided we would try something different. We are on a mission to do lots of cheap and hand made things this christmas. That includes cards. So when a brainwave hits I jumped on it. Queue blow paint Christmas cards.

What you need:
  • Card cut up into small pieces (we did ours into 4 from an A4 sheet of card)
  • Paint
  • Straws
  • A big set of lungs.

We started off by putting big blobs of paint on the card and slowly blowing it out into a shape using the straw. Once we got the hang of it we got a bit more adventurous by doing various shapes like the tree below.

Once these were dry we trimmed them down and mounted them onto coloured card and decorated with glitter and pens to make them a bit more sparkly.

A perfect quick craft to do with the kids!

A Hotter Shoe Shop.

I love nothing better than a good shop. It's pretty tricky to go on my own without Max, so when I was invited to a shoe shopping event at Hotter Shoes I would have been stupid to say no!

I've never actually been into Hotter shoes. I normally stick to my trusty Dr Martens or Vans. But they aren't girly, they aren't smart and lets face it, they aren't the comfiest at times! I've always walked past the shop and never gone in, mainly because it looks way too expensive for me and I'm a grubby graduate with way too many bills!

When I got to the store it was so warm and welcoming. Sofas and comfy chairs lined the place and a single shoe of each design were out. It meant that you had to talk to a sales assistant who could help you with your purchase. They seemed to know every design back to front and really helped me find the right thing for me. I wanted something without a heel but with so much comfort that they felt like slippers.

I knew I wanted a boot. I've never had some proper nice boots and I had a few in my mind from browsing the website. Unfortunately a few of them didn't fit properly due to insteps and fat feet but I eventually found my pair. The ones that fitted like a glove and felt heavenly to walk in.

The great thing about Hotter shoes is they have so much technology in them that you feel like you are walking on clouds. From rigid rubber soles to cushion soft insoles, each pair is crafted with such loving care that you feel like your investment is worth it. Also knowing that they are made in a UK factory is even better as you know you are helping the country too!

Hotter have created such a stylish range of shoes that you could be mistaken that you were somewhere like ASOS or Topshop. They have great fashion advisors that help work out the best colour and style trends so they can create some amazing shoes. Note: It's not just slippers for your grandma!

I had such an amazing time at the event that I will most definitely be treating myself to another pair of shoes, or maybe one of their lush bags! I'll pop a proper review/fashion post of my shoes when the weather is a bit better but for now check out my beauties!

Note: I received a free pair of shoes when I attended the event. All views are my own.

Giraffe Bournemouth Tesco Extra

When I heard that there was a Giraffe restaurant opening at Scott's work I was ridiculously excited. It's one of those places I've been to once and can never find one in the area to go to. Luckily they have been acquired by Tesco and have now opened a chain of their restaurants inside the actual stores so you can have some great food after all that shopping.

When we got there I didn't actually expect to forget that I was at a supermarket. It took me by surprise how light and airy it felt with some great music and a wonderful atmosphere. Me and Max went for some delicious handmade lemonade that wasn't too bitter or sweet. It hit the spot perfectly. Scott went for some coffee, which he said was spot on.

When it came to mains Scott and Max both had burgers. Both of which inhaled them. Scott said his was one of the best he had eaten in a long time and the sweet potato fries were to die for. Max had wedges on the side and while they were nice it wasn't presented very well. I went for the chicken and cheese quesadillas which were amazing. So tasty and I could have eaten more if it were not for the fact we had dessert to come.

Dessert took a while as there were a few teething problems, but my god were they great. Scott had a chocolate brownie whilst Max opted for some strawberry ice cream. I on the other hand went for the chocolate mousse which was so good that I wanted to take a tub away with me.

If you can get past the fact that this great restaurant is in a supermarket I would 100% recommend it. Such a great place to go with affordable food and drinks. Might even pop there for a cheeky cocktail with Scott after a shift.

Craft Fun

I hate painting with Max. It's one of those things that really bugs me as I know he loves it but when I think of the mess and the meltdowns I normally just throw him in the bath with some washable paints. After much pestering though I decided that we should do some crafts. That painting could work now we had laminate in the kitchen, and if I put enough sheeting down that Dexter Morgan could be proud then it might just work.

Until I realised we didn't have a paintbrush to paint these adorable cardboard letters I had got him. In the midst of the move we had left a few odd things behind and a paintbrush was one of them! So I thought I would improvise by using different materials to make different textures and patterns.

Let's just say that Max LOVED it. He fully immersed himself in blobbing and swirling and mixing that all of the jars had now turned a funny shade of brown and the cardboard letters we had were covered from front to back. It turned out better than I thought. Having said that he did paint the letters about an inch thick in paint so 3 days later they were still drying!

Maybe this craft thing isn't so bad after all!

Max's Birthday Treats

I have been so well organised this year compared to last year! All of Max's presents are bought, hidden and his party (well day out) is planned out. Yep you can congratulate me now. So I thought I would share the presents that I've got him for his birthday.

  • Lego City Advent Calendar: This comes in quite pricey but the fact his birthday falls on the 1st December means its a handy present for him! Will have to make sure he only opens one day at a time though.
  • Raleigh Vintage bike: I picked this up second hand on facebay in MINT condition for a tenner. I'm in love with it and it comes with stabilisers too.
  • Lego Storage Head: We are selling his Duplo to make way for Lego. This is a great storage head for all of it. And I'm a sucker for anything with a cute skull.
  • Hape Toy Cars: These bamboo toy cars are perfect for his toy garage. Some of his cars have got a bit broken with his playing so these look pretty robust.
  • Finding Nemo Pop! Vinyls: Some may call these collectibles but we call the common ones toys! Max loves playing with these and the Nemo ones will be a perfect addition.
  • Day and Night Game: This game is great for thinking and co-ordination. Each page has a different design to copy and the child must do so with all the wooden pieces.
So that's what we've got him. We are going out to Lemur Landings for the morning with his best friend and for ice cream after (his choice)! We haven't spent loads and each thing we have got him we know he will love as no doubt his family will spoil him.

Max and the won't go to bed saga

As I write this, Max is sat playing with his toy kitchen at past 9pm. Having woken at 6am and played non stop with friends and family you would think he was exhausted but he never seems to give in, no matter what we've tried.

"But kids need lots of sleep!" Of course they do and you don't think that I worry. Thankfully when he's ridiculously tired he will cart himself off to bed or for a nap.

Here are a few things that are helping us with getting him into the bedtime mood though:

  • No technology after dinner. We found that letting him watch tv or something really over stimulated him and almost sent him off into a trance. Instead we sit him down in his room, put a couple of lamps on and play with puzzles or his kitchen.
  • Bath time. Sometimes he doesn't have a bath in the evening. If it's been a lazy day or he's jumped in our shower it isn't worth it. We normally add a drop of lavender oil so it can calm and soothe him.
  • Book, books book!  We can read up to 5/6/10 books before bed. We do normally stick to 3 and pick a variety. Ones that will calm him down, ones that are funny and ones that he can get involved in.
  • Have a reward chart up. It's not one we have stickers to put on but it's one that acts as more of a checklist. It gives him those bits of independence knowing that he can say "I need to brush my teeth now". Giving him the guidance rather than the restrictions.
  • Leave him to it. As long as he's in his room and playing quietly, we normally leave him to play with his toys. In all honesty he's like us adults. He will go to bed when he's tired. You can't force him.

This won't work for everyone. As you know, our bed times are by no means perfect. He's just dropping off now, 30 minutes after I started writing it. But it will get there and don't feel bad if your kids don't have the perfect bedtime routine. Let's face it, neither do we.

October Books

October was the month of tantrums, late nights and slowly getting into a proper bedtime routine. It was also full of hilarious picture books. Here are our 4 favourites of this month.

There's a Dinosaur in My Bathtub - Say hello to Amelia. She has a big secret that you mustn't tell to anyone! She has a French dinosaur called Pierre living in her bathtub for the summer holidays. I know that might be hard to believe but I assure you it's true! This book is hilarious and such a great book for banishing the idea that dinosaurs and monsters are scary things.

Max and the Won't Go to Bed Show - Max is the best magician in the world and for this trick he is going to defy all odds and not go to bed! This is 100% fitting for us. Not only is our Max a magician (he does hide things everywhere) but he refuses to go to bed. We love this book as I'm pretty sure someone has been watching our family to write it!

There's a Lion in My Cornflakes - Have you ever wondered what would happen if you collected all those tokens for a free lion? Well these brothers found out that sometimes you don't always get what you expect. This book is charming and full of unexpected twists and turns showing you that even when you don't get what you want you can still make the most of it.

Oh No! - A book without any words can't be fun right? But this book has some amazing transparent pages meaning that things aren't all they seem once they turn the page. A bird sat in the safety of a tree? OH NO, the bird is in the cat's mouth. This book has Max squealing with glee at each page turn even though there are no words.

What books are you loving at the moment?
