The Glass Slippers - Tutti Frutti Productions Review

The Sherling Studio Christmas shows at the Lighthouse Theatre in Poole are a huge past of the festive season for local theatre goers. Not only is it often a young person's first exposure to theatre, but the shows they put on are magical and capture imaginations.

This year, the show gracing the studio's stage is The Glass Slippers by Tutti Frutti Productions. A reimagined version of the classic tale of Cinderella, with plenty a twist and turns. The show is aimed at younger audiences (suitable from age 3+), with a running time of 60 minutes, so I tasked my wonderful 5 year old princess obsessed reporter to let me know what she thought!

The Glass Slippers follows the tale of Cinderella however it takes away the dated ideas around ugly step sisters, and a Prince needing to save the day. Cinderella adores the outdoors, wants to save the planet and loves living by the sea. However her new family don't have the same ideas and much prefer to scroll on their devices and order things online. Prince Charming however is fed up of being someone he is not. After fronting his 'Glass Slippers' brand, he feels he puts on a fake version of himself and can't be true to who he is. When Cinderella and Prince Charming happen to meet on the beach, it's clear they can be the best versions of themselves, and a friendship begins.

Whilst most versions of Cinderella push a girl into the spotlight a social sensation because she "looks right", this version did a ingenious twist on the classic tropes. The glass slippers are designer shoes, the Prince is a social media star, and even the Pumpkin is the name of the family boat. The show truly takes the original tale of Cinderella and flips it on it's head in a brilliant way.

The tale is woven with a soulful soundtrack, plenty of humour, and a quirky set design. It was full of amazing, catchy songs and you could see that the whole production (written by Emma Reeves) was created with a modern audience in mind. There were plenty of jokes for all ages and is set at just the right pace for a 5 year old (and an adult too!).

The actors were brilliant and engaging with the whole audience; both kids and parents alike. With friendly and "in character" chat with the audience from when they entered the theatre to when the audience were going home. Each character brought a twist on the classic portrayal that we assume the characters to be. The Stepmother and Stepsisters aren't "ugly", merely constantly distracted by their screens, and the Prince appears self obsessed until we truly get to know him. And whilst you might feel there were 10 characters on stage, the cast is made up of 3 fantastic actors that lend themselves to all roles (Hope Yolanda, Jazz Harbour, and Matthew Nicholson).

The cosy Sherling Studio allows the right level of interactivity and engagement needed in a show to engage young audiences and is perfect for kids and adults alike. The Glass Slippers is truly a show to capture the imagination of young theatre goers. Its a bold, reimagining of a classic that is full of heart and humour, allowing a wholesome and beautiful message that lifelong friendships and being true to yourself matters more than finding "true love".
